From August 2 to 4, 2024, the Marriott Hotel in downtown Hartford became a vibrant center of inspiration and recognition during the annual three-day leadership summit hosted by Heart Bible International University (HBIU) and Black Excellence Global Enterprise. This year marked a significant milestone, as it was the third consecutive gala celebrating outstanding leaders from various sectors, including politics, academia, sports, and the arts.
The primary goal of the event was to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities.
The gala culminated in the prestigious Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award, established by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation in 2003. This award recognizes those who dedicate their time to humanitarian efforts and community service, shining a light on the vital role of civic engagement in society.
A notable highlight of this year’s summit was the introduction of the Black Excellence Lifetime Achievement Award, aimed at honoring influential leaders from around the globe who have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of others.
The ceremony recognized exceptional public servants, entrepreneurs, community leaders, and artists whose work leaves a lasting impact on Black communities, both locally and internationally. This new award serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of celebrating achievements and fostering excellence within marginalized communities.
The weekend also featured the Heart Bible International University Graduation Ceremony, which drew students from various parts of the world, with a notable representation from Africa. Among the standout moments was the inspiring story of Dr. Professor Moses Jedidiah Muwanguzi. As the first HBIU student in Africa to take the National Certification Exam (NCE) for licensure, his journey underscored the transformative power of education. His testimony resonated with attendees, motivating many to pursue their aspirations despite challenges.
The event welcomed a distinguished roster of dignitaries, including Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam. The mayor, an attorney and former nonprofit executive, shared his compelling background as the son of Sri Lankan refugees, born in Zimbabwe. His personal narrative of resilience and service resonated deeply with attendees, reinforcing the summit’s theme of overcoming adversity to achieve greatness.
Joining Mayor Arulampalam were notable figures such as Chief of Police Kenny A. Howell, who dedicated over 22 years to law enforcement before retiring in 2013. His commitment to public safety and community engagement exemplifies the spirit of service celebrated throughout the weekend. Additionally, Fire Chief Shelly L. Carter, a pioneer in firefighting initiatives and community outreach, shared her experiences in leading programs like the Girl’s Future Firefighter Camp, inspiring young women to consider careers in emergency services.
The summit also featured Erica Deblois, a representative from the FBI New Haven Citizens Academy, who underscored the importance of community partnerships in fostering trust and collaboration between law enforcement and the communities they serve. Her involvement highlighted the significance of civic engagement and the role of citizens in shaping public safety initiatives.
Throughout the weekend, the atmosphere buzzed with energy and purpose. Attendees participated in various workshops and discussions centered on leadership, community service, and personal development. Networking opportunities abounded, allowing participants to forge connections and exchange ideas aimed at creating lasting change in their communities.
As the summit concluded, the spirit of collaboration and empowerment left an indelible mark on all who attended. The event not only celebrated individual achievements but also emphasized the collective responsibility to uplift and support one another in the pursuit of excellence. The organizers expressed their commitment to continuing this tradition of recognition and inspiration, setting a powerful tone for future initiatives that aim to further enhance the lives of individuals and communities alike.
